Replaced my water pump about 6 months and 3k miles ago with a brand new AIRTEX pump from Northern Auto Parts.
It came with a brand new lower pipe and of course a new rubber "O" ring for the connection.
Everything has been fine until we had a little cold weather here (Florida) don't laugh we had high teens where I am over a couple of nights.
Anyway, the "O" ring is evedentally leaking now, I did snug up the 2 bolts a little, and have run the truck some and when its warm it doesn't leak, I drove it some 1200 miles over a recent weekend and no leak, but when I returned and it got cold again 29* it started leaking again.
I have ordered 2 new "O" rings from Ed, 1 to use and 1 to put in the glove box, and wonder what I should use to better seal it up this time....I just sprayed it the last time with my CRC spray, I don't normally like using sealers/silicone on stuff like rubber "O" rings.
Suggestions/experiances?? Thanks!
I just finished resealing mine. I couldn't find a new O'ring so I sealed mine with permatex Water pump & Thermostat housing gasket maker . I've been fighting it all morning should have known to check here first.Where did you locate the O'rings?
Thanks for the link to the old thread!! there is 1 person there that ended up using the "O" ring for the tstat on the lower pipe because thats what the folks at carquest gave him, he said it worked so well that he ended up re-using it when he changed his waterpump much later, anyone else do this?? I really don't want to do this more than 1 more time.........my feeling it that with the change to ELC and a coolant filter that my NEW water pump should last at least 125k may be more, the original went 80k.....
I hate pesky little leaks!!!!!
Anybody else recomend using the "O" ring for the tstat housing on the lower coolant pipe?? is it too big/thick?? 1 guy so far has reported doing this....
I'm going to do this job soon and want to do it only once more for the next 125k miles at least!! Thanks!!
I replaced my lower pipe and upper pipe (thermostat housing) on my last flush. The top one I read was pretty much rolling the dice if I re-used it and my lower had been seeping and was all corroded and junked, so I got an OEM lower and bought the billet one for the T-stat (upper). The cast iron of the block and the perfect machining of the billet did not match well at all. In addition to the gaskets I used some permatex gasket material as well for the upper AND lower pipe connections. Over a year later and I haven't had a drop leak from either connection. I recommend the gasket and some Permatex and you can't go wrong.
I definitely recommend letting the Permatex set up for about 1/2 hour (skin over) before you put the housing on and bolt it down. Then wait for as long as you can before putting the hoses on and filling the system up (overnight would be ideal) to let the material fully set up before closing the system and introducing fluid.
I put a small bead of RTV around the flange, along with the O-ring, during my last W/P replacement. About 5 years ago, the first one seeped, when cold, from the pipe flange after replacing the W/P. The little "added insurance" has kept it leak-free this time.
OK, Thanks! Thats what I'll do, take it apart, clean everything up, use a littel silicone sealer and re-assemble and let dry overnight before putting coolant back in.
I used the square cut 'square' ring on the lower housing outlet, as well as the thermostat. My lower o ring didn't fit very well for a seal on the lower. The square cut fit really well, and hasn't leaked. I do know that I have a little seep at the block to water pump area only when cold. Not sure there, but, yes, the square cut can be used with the thermostat as well as lower elbow outlet.
