spring on stock steering shaft

Hey all,

I have a stupid a question, what is the purpose of the spring on the stock steering shaft right under the steering wheel?

The reason I ask is because I'm using the stock steering shaft/column and modifying them to work with a power steering box. I see there are two "bushings" at the top of the steering column/shaft but I'm not sure what the purpose of the spring is and was wondering if I could remove it without messing something up.

thanks
David

Before I installed the one my 55 the shaft moved around alot during turning so in all essence it holds the steering shaft steady at the top.

Ok, that makes sense. I suppose the spring needs to be compressed for it to work properly?

It pushes the cone of the upper bearing down into the cup of the bearing, to keep it a tight fit regardless of temperature changes.
