I have a 1987 F-350 with a 6.9L diesel. I turn the key to the run position waiting for the glowplugs to heat up. Then turn it to the start position and all I get is a loud click sound and no cranking. Just wondering what part/s I should look at replacing. I personnally suspect the solinoid is bad but I am not sure. Any guidance would be appreciated
It takes an awful lot of current to crank a 6.9. Make sure the batteries are good, check that the battery posts are clean and that the wire terminals are clean and tight. Check that the ground wire (neg.) is clean and tight where it bolts to the engine.
If all that checks out and it still just clicks then jump the two large terminals on the fender mounted starter relay, if the starter now cranks then the relay is bad and needs to be replaced. If the starter does not crank the engine then you need to check that the wires at the starter are tight on the connections. If so then, I think, you will need to pull the starter and have it tested.
I should mention that there is a super diesel section here. Just scroll on down a bit from here to the Diesel Section and then click on the pre-powerstroke diesel page. Great guys on there for any diesel problens.
Hope this helps.
