Torque Converter ate pump input shaft
I have an E4OD out of a '97 F450 that had the pump drive shaft shear off near the back end of the torque converter. I thought the pump must have siezed up to cause this, but it turns over smoothly by hand. After looking closer, I found that the rear thrust washer (bearing) inside the torque converter is flopping around. I think the hardened washer (bearing race) must have settled by gravity against the pump shaft and slowly wore a groove in it. Once it got thin enough, the shaft sheared off what was left.
Has anyone else had this happen?
I haven't had time to pull the pan off and see if there is any metal. If there is no metal I think I can just repair/replace the pump and have a good tranny!
