I heard today that some shops cut old box sides off and flange the existing metal, and glue the custom-cut panels to that flange with body adhesive. That way, you don't have to grind any tack welds, or pull the box off! Is this something I should look into, or should I borrow a welder, grind all the old tacks away and peel the skin off, and tack weld a new skin on like factory???

is this a truck that you are restoring or a truck that you are just fixing rust on and not a keeper?
if restoring do it right
Some shops do this to save time and charge you for the other way(rip you off)
if it was me I'd do it the right way drill out the spot welds and put the skins on like the factory

That is what I was thinking... I mean, the box is off anyway, so I have access to the front wraparound... I might be able to borrow a mig welder, but it is the flux-wire type... Will this work okay for the welds? I mean, I think even the factory used just spot welds to build the box... Right?
I just hope the aftermarket panels look nice to start with...

That mig should work okay !
Here something else to think about !
I would try and cross brace the bed somehow before taking old skins
of it could get out of alignment or twist making it a bear to put the new metal on? especialy because you have it of the frame.

Thanks for the tip! I suppose I could cut plywood gussets the complete width of the box in two or three spots...
When we welded the box end (tailgate posts) last week, we couldn't get the driver's side up as high as the passenger, and still get the tailgate to close... Pretty touchy job! We used a come-along, jack, measuring tapes, etc etc... But still couldn't get it satisfactory. Oh well, at least the sides don't flap in the breeze anymore! And I don't have to squeeze the box sides together to get the gate to latch anymore!
Has anyone done a complete box side full skin replacement here? I am wondering how the wraparound areas work; if ou have to beat them flat around the front of the box???
