Strange Dealer Report

So I've been having this ongoing massive vibration. Same old story I've had for over a year. Weather is cold, motor is cold, get going down the road, ~40 mph+ throw it in 4th or OD and set the cruise and there's massive vibration. buddy riding with me said it was going through the ENTIRE truck, I'd namely feel it in the steering wheel. This is the third time it's been in the dealer for it. First time they put in front ***** joints and a driver side wheel bearing. Helped a bit, problem subsided over last summer. Comes back even worse this winter (it's a northern cold thing). Take it in over Christmas and they thought it was the FICM but wound up putting something else in (can't remember off the top of my head).

Now she's in for the third time since I'VE had her. Second time at this dealer. The tech, same one as last time I believe, can still see it coming through while it's hooked up going down the road. They THINK it's either the fly wheel or clutch. Tranny is coming out and parts are ordered. I'm completely at a loss. The fly wheel? Does that sound remotely right??? Or the CLUTCH? I have hard time believing that either could/would cause THAT much vibration.

Any thoughts? Keeping ya'll posted again. I just hope they get it fixed. Had something like 72,300 of the allotted 75k of my extended warranty. Betting this is the last time she'll get to go in on Ford's dime other than strictly engine issues, and THAT warranty will expire in Sept...

Wink

So is the vibration related to engine revs, vehicle speed or only in a certain gear?? If it's either of the latter, it's not your engine/flywheel/clutch. If it's speed related, more likely to be a driveshaft. Has one got water in it and freezes solid to one side overnight? You could even pull the rear shaft out and drive on the front only to see if it still happens. Just some thought's.

no it's always there, just becomes more pronounced with 40+ mph speeds, and about tenfold with the cruise. since she's still got warranty, i'm just going to be content to let the Ford guys deal with it.

OK I'll be the dummy that pipes up & offers the obvious which has likely been checked out & ruled out long ago.

U-joint?

I had a vibration in an 01 F350 crew that I couldn't track down for the life of me.

We were considering & trying all kinds of serious things. I had checked U-joints before checking anything so it was ruled out early.

I checked them by looking for movement while under the truck, like one normally might check a U-joint. I couldn't get any movement at all out of them.

Then just by luck I happened to be looking through the passenger rear wheel opening from outside the truck one day & I'll be damned! The drive shaft was turned to precicely the right angle to present to my view a busted cap on the rear U-joint. I didn't catch it while under the truck & could not get any movement out of the joint by hand but she sure as hell was bad none the less.

I changed it out & she was silky smooth, vibration gone.

(and I felt mine through the steering wheel too.)

Like I said, hate to be the guy suggesting the obvious but seriously, check those joints out really good. Sometimes you can't get movement out of them but they are still bad.

update on my situation here. talked to the ford guys yesterday and they are putting a new clutch and flywheel in it. a buddy here was talking to a trucker man in PA who said it's likely that is what the problem was because a dying clutch can make that much vibration and it can take the flywheel with it. plus the way i drove it when i bought it may have been what burned the clutch prematurely.

we'll see friday. they should be done with her tomorrow and i'll pick her up on my way back for spring break...

Just a thought, usually if the clutch is bad you can feel it in the pedal, have them check the U joints as stated above and also give the center bearing a close look as well as the drive shaft angle.

Could be many many things. From tires, to alignment, to your injection pump! I think if it was your clutch, you would feel it. Especially the way you drive. The pedal would be different and revs would be funny(especially in such a powerful truck). This happened to me in a small diesel truck, I changed the tired and had an alignment done and it was all good.
