Trans Cooler

Ok so the dealer just called me and first they said they need to order a new dipstick tube cause the other one wouldnt come off. So I said fine but they said it wont come in till saturday. I said fine then he said it wouldnt be done till monday cause service dont work saturday. So I said fine but I go to school on monday so it will have to be tuesday. Then two hours later he calls me up and says I know I was gone when you first brought you truck in and he told me this monday too when I had to get a new rental. He was like I called your warranty company to make sure everything was covered and what not cause I wasnt here and I wasnt sure. So then he says well you need a trans cooler and its 362 dollars. I was kinda lost cause when I took my truck in the other service tec told me that it was just going to be 400 for the upgrade and 100 deductible. Now this other tec is a nice guy and cant see him screwing me over. He said the warranty on the new trans requires that a trans cooler be put in otherwise the warranty is void. But I started to think how can this go bad? Now do you think I need a new one or should the original be fine?
My price just went from 500 to 875 with a new cooler and dipstick. I really cant afford that but I dont wana be screwed out of the warranty. I think me and my dad are going to do some talking with the dealer tomorrow

I think they want to be sure no particles from your old transmission that are hanging around in your present cooler get into the new one. I can understand that, but why can't they just flush your old one out?

It must be one hell of a cooler that he wants to sell you at that price. Take a look here; Amazon.com: Flex-a-lite 4110 TransLife 4-Pass Transmission Oil Cooler Kit - 10,000 GVW: Automotive

Have them install a new cooler that you take in to the dealer yourself. Hand it to them and don't pay more than a 1/2 hour labor. If they want more labor time tell them that you will do it yourself. You have to have the cooler for the warranty but who installs it is not specified.

I would buy a factory cool. If you buy an aftermaket you will have to change you mounts, lines and fittings. I would assume that is with labor, because the hd/tt cooler lists out for $162. Whitch eithe they are getting close to 3hr labor of one heck of a mark up on the part. I would want to see a break down on the cooler. I would stay with factory though

The above points on buyng an aftermarket cooler are correct on the labor to install being a bunch more.

Also, if you don't use what they suggest then you can kiss your warranty goodbye. They kind of have you on this one I think.

Ya it sucks. I told them fine order it but I really think 360 is rediculous for it. If its 162 like benningstspeed1.0 said then with that said they wana charge me 200 when you say people say it should take 1/2 hour to hour. I cant believe they would charge that much. I dont know what the going rate it sounds like thats about 4 hours of work they are telling me.

Why wouldn't the extended warranty pay for this item if that's what the dealer recommends to do the repair right? I guess if they didn't make money on extended warranties, they wouldn't be selling them.

Well its a General Electric extended warranty and they arent the best warranty company. I dont recomend them there are things they dont cover on parts they do cover. The cover the trans but not the cooler. I think its stupid

If the warranty says you have to replace the extra cooler it doesn't make a lot of sense. You still have fluid trash in the radiator cooler and all the lines. sounds likes a way to screw the consumer. Both coolers could be flushed with a good machine but I understand the manufacturers point to cover their backside. Why not an inline filter that has been discussed on other threads.

THE GOING RATE AT MY DEALER IS $70 hr. I WOULD THINK THAT IT SHOULD TAKE AN HOUR MIN. TO CHANGE THE COOLER. IT SITS IN BEHIND THE BUMPER AND IS COVERED ON THE BOTTUM BY A SPLASH SHIELD

Ya I dont know. When I go to pick it up I will ask how long it took them to put the trans cooler in. If it took them a hour I will ask them how much the cooler was and how they figured that much. There will be alot of questions about labor time when I pick it up.
