Hey guys the sticker on the door is telling me i have a 3 spd c-5 trans, which is supposed to be simular to the c-4. Does anyone know if this trans is any good or do i want to look into finding a different one. if so which is the best for my truck its an 82 f100 with a 302 and i plan on mainly highway miles but i do live on a farm and i pull a horse trailer with it sometimes. Also i have noticed when i am cruising along at a decent speed and let off the gas the truck slows down real quick like its not able to coast kinda like gearing down but im staying in drive. Is it just the way the trans is, or is there something i could fix. I know this is killing my mileage. Thanks for any help i can get.
This is the same trans as in my Mustang when it originally had the 3.8 v6 (now it has a 5.0). I still have that tranny in the mustang and I will admit I romp on it pretty hard and it seems to hold up to it. I would guess they put it in the light duty 2wd trucks. Its really similar to a c4 so its a good tranny. As far as the truck slowing down real quick, thats just how it is. No overdrive, just the 1:1 final ratio. This factor is multiplied if you have numerically higher rear gears also, ie my truck with no overdrive and 4:10's falls on its face as soon as i let off the gas while cruising. Do you know what rear gears you have? If you are going to tow with it i would just take it easy on her, as I would imagine it is not the best tranny to tow with. It is more along the lines of a car tranny.
Thanks for the info man that is what i was wanting to know. And just to let everyone know i bought a can of Sea Foam today and put it in at the parts store before I left. When I pulled out my truck ran as good as an old farm truck should, but by the time I got to the house, about 10 miles, my ol' 302 was purring like it was off the show room floor. I had read some posts about some good results with it so I thought why not. I'm gonna get a can every tune-up.
