top load 4spd ??
in order to obtain the correct information on what i have, i was told that the truck has a top load. where can i find some sort of casting numbers or markings in order to properly identify what i actually do have? the truck is at the welders getting the steering box fixed and i know i had one hell of a mess under it and was wanting to get it overhauled/new seals etc... but wanted to know what i have. Also, does the transfer case have any markings that will allow me to identify it. Reason for asking all of this is for the reasons above ( wanting to start fresh ) and also to just properly identify what i have. i know when buying used old trucks you never know what you actually have. thanks folks.

Several transmissions are "top loading".
The "top loader" was a performance car transmission from the '60s-'70s. There was a 4 speed OD trans built on that pattern for vehicles of your vintage.
Do you have a granny first gear? If so, you may have a top loading trans, but it is probably a T18 or NP435, not the 4 speed OD. If you are geared like a 3 speed, have a big gap 2nd to 3rd, and 4th is over, you have the 4 speed OD.

yeah, i found that page and bookmarked it yesterday while searching. i do have a granny 1st gear. when i get teh truck back i will get up under it and compare it with the photos provided. was just trying to educate myself while i was waiting. thank you for the reply too.
