It would be easier and probably cheaper to build or buy a Lightning 5.4s/c and transplant it to a truck that is already 4wd than trying to convert a Lightning to 4wd.
actually the transition would not be all that difficult.. on the other hand it would be extremely costly.... to perform the change all you would need is to aquire a 4wd front axle 4x4 tranny and transfer case and and go to advanceadapters.com and have them build you an adapter to fit the tranny to the block ( approx 1500.00 just for adapter) send the vehicle computer system to a plant in houston, TX ( advance adapters can give you numbre dont have it off hand) and bolt all togather CUT hole in floor to install 4wd shifter.. that is the basic steps of course it will not be that easy it will take a good amount of time as wel as money..probably in the high 4-5K range but if that is what you want it can be done.
hello, I'm new to this forum and just registered, but this idea is exactly why I registered. I'm a die hard lightning fan but can't drive one because it only come in rwd. I want 4wd so I can make it an all season vehicle. I live in the snow belt. My approach is going to be a little different. I'm going to take a reg cab, short box, 4x4 and make it 90% lightning. Lower it, suspension work, wheels, tires, and of course a supercharger. I plan on useing the 04 so at the moment I'm still in the planning stages. besides, I'm still paying for current car.
Sounds good, keep in mind as of right now, I don't think there is a blower set up for the '04 24v 5.4 triton engine, and I doubt 16v part will work. You'd be better off getting a new or slightly used 2003 4x4 5.4, but if you get the lightning engine, fine, I doubt the stock tranny and transfer case will stand up to the power.
You would also need a 4x4 frame.4x4s use torsion bars where 2 WD use coil springs. The front diff. also mounts to the frame which the 2wd has no pervisions for.
Johnny
I saw a 4X4 lightning at the track. I don't know if the guy paid the dealer to do this or if he did it himself but it looked just like a lightning except it was higher and had a front differential. He could only muster a 15.4 due to the extra weight.
Depending on how much 4xing you do you may want to look at also getting a straight axle in the front. If you do any off roading at all you'll like a lot better than the independant front end. If you just using mainly highway or roads stick with the independant though. Better handling! Just thought I would through that out. If your going to spend the money anyways.
Heres a good qeustion: Why hasn't the SVT group come out with anything like that yet? Something that is very capable in off roading.
Its too bad you don't want to do it to a Gen 1 Lightning. I believe the bolt holes are all there to do the swap. All you would need is a doner truck with all the 4x4 stuff. As far as the new trucks, I think it would be cheaper to get a regular 4x4 truck and put on a blower/lower it. Bell Tech makes a lowering kit for the 4wd Fords.
As far as actually NEEDING 4wd, my winter truck is my HD. The positrac rear end is plenty of traction for me. I have already driven it in some of the iciest conditions I have ever seen in 12 years of driving in Alaska. I am going to continue using my stock 20" tires, too. No problem.
