does anyone have a good idea about fixing the rusty seam on a bedside of 67/72 pickups? some holes showing.should of got a new bed when i started this project, but my "bodyman" said it wouldn't be a problem, now hes not sure what's the best way to fix it.the rest of the bed isn't too bad. thanx, chris
Hi,
I would try to clean it up as much as possible grind it off and see just how bad it is. if there aren't to many holes you can weld them shut with a mig grind again to smooth it off and body fill it if there are big holes or quite a few of them mabe you should look for another bed. but don't just fill them with body filler because it will pop out and then the paint job is ruined.

John is right, but i avoided this question soon as i saw it!
I have seen 67-72 beds with rot all along the seam. And holes big as dimes. One or two spot you could cut it out grind square and weld in new peices. In other words just rebuild the bad areas. But if it's like that all the way down the sides i would consider new bed sides(two peice,200 bucks!)if the upper side was ok but never considered fixing one that was to bad.I have ran into more that were good at the seam than bad though.Or find another bed?
Either way, hope you get something goin' for yourself on it.

Must have!
No,he said he was real busy all the time so he might not be a "regular"hope he comes around though.I just do all this stuff on the weekends and only if me or two of my best friends have projects.I dont do it for a living. It's ben every weekend since April on my 70!Full time body men can tell you whats new, easiest, and what not to bother with.Us "enthusiast" will tell you to try anything!
DId you know that most body shops dont weld to many panels in any more?THey glue them on!NO kiddin, quarter panels, cab corners, you name it!I seen the stuff and it is stout stuff too.
But i will stick with the ol mig.I ain't to interested in glueing in sheet metal when i have a 700.00 welding outfit that need used.
Blue a couple of my friends have body shops and I used that glue to put on a quarter panel (just wanted to try it out in his shop)that stuff is awesome but I kinda like the weld I would hate to get hit and my glue lets go it would look like something from the cartoons!!!!! pieces everywhere LOL the stuff I usually get to play with is stuff that needs patches, old stuff that would take a five gallon can of that stuff to hold it together I only do my own bodywork. I went to school for it but can make more in the sheet metal union well it's still metal anyway. and I can get all the patch metal I need and make just about any part I need. John

This seam is particularly tricky due to the joint used to adhere these two panels. A quality job will require you to seperate these two panels, address the rot/rust issues and then spot weld the two back together. Regardless of methods, you must chemically treat this seam or it will undoubtedly lead to rust coming out from within. BTW--this seam is supposed to be sealed with the flexible body sealer prior to paint application.

Hey guys, I'm still here!!!
It's been real hectic for me lately. (12 hr. days/6 days a week)
As for Chris's problem, I'm not that familiar with this body style. (Always wanted a 67 though) Can you post me some pic's of the problem area? I'll then be able to help better.
All this heckling reminds me of a bad episode of the muppets!:7
John,
My '71 has rust along that seam (only on the drivers side) and the best that I can tell is that it is from drivin on 2 lane roads and getting dirt or salt (which I doubt, since it is an Alabama truck) on that side. I also have through the body rust between the bed and the rear corner along the metal strip. Other than the rust through the inner fender (under battery) it is all surface stuff.
I need to know where in the world do you get the pliable seam filler from??? I have looked everywhere, except paint and body shops. I am trying to save a couple of bucks wherever I can.
Will start dissasemble of the truck after the F-100 Supers' in which I will be attending....
thanks

If one takes the time to do something right the first time will not have to do it over a second.
Hi Chrispy, the best fix I have seen for this problem is to find an old bodyman who knows how to lead .Repair the problem and lead the seam in,no more rust in the seam.I have seen the end product and it looks great, I own two pre 73 trucks that will have this fix sooner or later, good luck.
the best fix I have
>seen for this problem is
>to find an old bodyman
>who knows how to lead
>.Repair the problem and lead
>the seam in,no more rust
>in the seam.
Would 50/50 "bar" solder work for this procedure? If not could I just use lead sinkers. I have access to the tinning irons for old style box gutters and tin roofs, would that do the job?
thanx , john
