With the tall rear end gears(2.75's in the couple I had,) a 300/NP435 combo actually works pretty good.
I have been kinda wanting a 4 speed in my truck. I would hate to have to cut another hole in the floor though. I don't know how to weld so i couldn't patch up the first hole thats been cut when my dad and I converted the truck to floor shift. Which I think is why the trans ended going out. Both the floor shifters (Mr Gasket universal 3 speed, Hurst Indy) had problems with getting stuck between gears when I shifted between 1st and 2nd. I have since fixed the problem.

My friend is actually supposed to check out this 80-86 F-150 thats abandoned at the apartment complex he works at and see what trans it has. It's supposed to have rust free body panels too. I could use them panels. Got quite a few rusted out ones.

Do you know if a T-5 out of a 93 mustang will work in my truck? I plan on putting a better trans in my mustang when I build my stroker motor.

Not sure about that, since it never was offered behind a truck. And I believe you would have shifter problems too, since the shifter is so short, and may be in the wrong place.

Stick with the truck trannies, and they will work. Here's the trannies they list for a 1980 f100.

T5 from a V8 Mustang will work, but it requires an adaptor, and a tail shaft housing from a Chev S10 T5 so the shifter will be in the correct place. No heavy loads or towing....

thanks franklin2. Thats alot of trannys to choose from. I'll check some of that out. I just remembered earlier today that my best friends husband used to work at a transmission shop. I might try and get him to rebuild mine if he will do it for a reasonable price. I can always help him too to refresh my memory on how to rebuild a trans.

Guess i'll skip on the t-5 then. still want to be able to tow if I have to. Don't want to go to all that work adapting a trans to a daily driver. Hopefully one day I can get another truck and start restoring the ol F-100.

There should be need to weld anything up, the 4 speed trucks have a removable floor plate where yours is solid, where you probably had to cut it for the floor shift. One from an auto 4x4 truck would probably have the shifter hole pretty close to where you'd need it for the 3 speed.
You can see what I'm talking about here:

If you want a straightforward bolt in swap, stick with a 4 speed. A 5 speed will require a pedal swap, and drilling your firewall for the clutch master cylinder. Possibly a clutch swap too.

That removable plate is pretty cool. I deffinately wouldn't want to go 5 speed then. I hate hydraulic clutches. I just put a new 11" clutch in my truck last year. Def don't wanna be replacing it again. I hope maybe this abandoned truck my friend found might be a 4 speed and I can gank the tranny out of it.
