Camo Paint

Anybody paint there truck camo? I am ready to do mine. I have done the research on NATO 3 color camo. Any fimiliar with the patterns that I want to paint. But,,,,,I don't know how much paint to buy. I e-mailed a company and they said that I would need a gallon of green and 12 spray cans of brown and 12 of black....!!!. That don't seem right. Does it? Seems like alot of paint. I plan on brushing the paint. Im hoping that the flat paint won't leave much brush marks. I do not have a compressor. Any help would be appreciated.
I also saw a website were a guy used Dutchboy outside house paint and matched it to NATO colors.... Could this really work????

Want a crazy idea? Use a roller instead of a brush. Try it out on some sheet metal first and you might be surprised. I would also use a primer under all of it for good measure.

The amount of paint you have IS NOT allot as a matter of fact you will be real tight.

You think a gallon of the major green color and a quart of the other 2 minor colors would suffice??? I'll try the roller idea. I have no problem with that.TY

Post Camo Paint

sir:

your question regarding camo paint--> real military camo is called carc. (chemical agent resistant coating). it is available in a 2-part (mil-c-46168) or 1 part (mil-p-53039) urethane epoxies. there is a special primer (mil-p-53022) used (it's white). i am not sure if you can buy the paint as a civilian. probably, commercial companies make 'look alike', without the military properties (which are interesting the patterns are described in various military technical bulletins and such, a good starting point would be TACOM (tank & automotive command). they have a good web site and you can probably get some pattern information there. there are more than 3 colors utilized, usually, and are broken down by a percentage of color and percentage of coverage. send me an email if you can't find any patterns and i will see what i can do.

whatever you do, be sure the colors match the paint chips from mil-std-595 if you want it to be authentic.

hope this helps.

Camo Paint

Im familiar with the CARC paint and its not a route that I am interested in going. Its best left to the pros. I have a 92 truck and I want to be authentic to the year. I believe in 91 the mil went to a three color scheme (45% 45% 5%) and a 4 color up to 91. I was looking at Aervoe paint. They say that they are up to mil spec as far as color goes and they also made up of high solids. I aslo looked into the patterns as per TB 43-0209. If I am incorrect please correct me. Im looking to get this right. I think I have it all together. The only issues that I see are amount of paint and method. Right now I think Im going to roll the paint after priming over the existing paint. As far as amount of paint. I know that rolling/brushing uses up alot more product that spraying. I don't have a sprayer. So brush/roll might be for me. Gallons / Quarts ???? Don't know. Aervoe wants $30 a gallon. Do I buy 1 gallon of each? I would think that there would be alot of extra paint. Like I wrote above please correct me if I am wrong. Thank You....

Just another suggestion. Being prior Army (retired) CARC has a shelf life. Visit a local Nat'l Guard or Reserve Cntr. I will bet they have some laying around and gladly give it away.
