Help please i just put a rebuilt motor in my 02 f350 new injector new turbo new hpop and new everthing. The truck seems to be idleing rough and it uses alot of oil like 1 gallon to every 400 miles. any ideas? I have already checked the injectors and they are tight so not sure what else to do.
Like Chris said, is it smoking or leaking? That a lot of oil you are using/loosing. Is there a warranty on the engine? I would check with the people you got the engine from. Who did you get it from?
Well there is smoke out the exhaust but its more like soot when I wipe it off my box, as for leaks there are not any I can find. I had a local engine builder do it but he's not sure what wrong either. I've had it into the ford dealer 3 times and they have not fixed anything just charged alot. They replaced the orings on my injectors because they said that they were loose, then said that should take care of it, well no difference so I'm lost.

Your engine builder needs to be sure what is going on, he needs to take it apart again and figure this out. This is nuts.
Is there any sign of oil in the degas bottle or in the bottom of the fuel bowl filter? How many miles do you have on the rebuild? Has anyone pulled the downpipe (exhaust) off the back of the turbo to see if there's oil in there?
FYI: We do have a 99-03 7.3 diesel section here that's located further down the main forum listing. We'll see if we can't get your thread moved down there so you get more input from the guys familiar with this motor.
random question, why does your truck have 6 doors? As for that motor, did the engine builder use the bad engine as a core? If so what was wrong with the original engine?
I'm not much of a diesel guy, but a gallon of oil every 400 miles is just rediculous. Any white or blue in the exhaust? Oil dont magically disappear in those quantites, i;m interested in what's going on with your truck.
Perhaps the turbo is whomped out and the oil is going into the cylinders from there?
yes we used the block all that happened is an injector stuck and melted a piston, so we just honed the block. As for blue or white smoke no just soot like I have a chip turned up. You like the sixdoor I built that in my shop up here. Well it could be the turbo but that is new.

I do in fact like the six door, just kinda odd as it has to be a PITA to park and unless you have a lot of kids or one helluva contracting firm its kinda pointless. Dont mistake what i'm saying though, it's ultra cool
Like i said before, I dont know too much about diesel engines, but if the smoke aint blue ya most likely aint burnin it with that high of a loss rate. Although perhaps if you're running a tuner perhaps the added bit of go juice burns hot enough to get a complete burn out of oil?
If its not being burnt it has to be going somewhere, have you let it idle for about 15 minutes periodically revving it to see if you get any drips?
I mean, lets say this oil is leaking at the turbo, it has to either go in the cylinders or out the tailpipe. Perhaps a napkin over the tailpipe at idle might reveal something the eye can't see? if indeed it's leaking into the exhaust side it could be getting atomized (similar to gas in a carburator) and flowing out in the exhaust. But to that same point it could be getting atomized and going into the intake which could yield a clean burn?
1 gallon every tank of gas (400 miles) is heavy consumption, and my thoughts are if it were leaking at an injector you'd get pufs of blue smoke because it's be almost like a drip. If it were leaking anywhere else it would either be in the coolant or on the ground.
Is there any way to leave the engine running then cut the fuel? In the labs here at school (the old General Motors Institute of Tech.) we have had instances on the cummins where on shutdown if we didnt cut the air supply they would draw oil up thru the piston rings and run off that for a few minutes.
If you have a similar phenomenon occuring at shut down that could account for it, but keep in mind these engines ran, but ran like garbage one they did this whole oil thru the rings thing.
Welcome to FTE 6doorford.
VERY nice truck.
As far as your engine is concerned, it looks like you need to do some tests: compression, leakdown, etc.
Using a quart every 100 miles is beyond acceptable.
