Hello everyone im a new on here i have a 1980 f150 with a 4.9L in it and i am going to rebuild the engine in it i am looking to get the best gas milage i can and most hp and torque fore little $$ (thinking 225 hp and 300 ft pounds of torque) i have several of these engines laying around and i have ones out of a 66 68 80 and a 90 with EFI i have found specifications on the computer not sure if they are true or not but it shows that 65-72 engines made 50 more hp and torque than the 73-86 so i am going to rebuild 68 engine "i think unless you guys say otherwise" i am puting the efi headers on it and most likely a clifford intake manifold .....anyways i was just wondering what you guys would do to boost performance and efficency with out spending a ton of money
'65 to '72 were old Gross HP standard numbers. Taken without accessories, fan, air cleaner etc. '72 saw a new SAE net figure with power measured more in line with how the engine would be outfitted in the vehicle. (This is the main drop in HP, early smog efforts like lower compression also contributed to HP number drop)
IF your EFI engine is sound, consider long tube header, maybe a cam. Depends on what type EFI, Speed Density or Mass Air Flow.
You may get another post with more detail on that--more than a couple of members have given info on this in the past. Your power will come in at a little higher rpm, but that's the nature of the beast. You'll still have decent low end and end up with a broader usable rpm range.
I am not sure how good my efi motor is i sure its in need of a rebuild my brother got it from a salvage yard for free and its been sitting on peice of plywood covered by a peice of sheet metal so i am sure its badly in need of a rebuild i will still be using a carberator though cause i just like the simplicity of them the truck this is going in to regularly hauls loads of 2000lbs so i would like to keep as much torque as i can but i imagen it will still have loads more than stock thanks for all the imput
Use that efi head on a carbed block. 252 cam with a 4 bbl or 2bbl conversion. EFI manifolds or headers. You'll have a pretty stout motor. I got a 252 duration cam in my 85 f150 HH and I've towed 8k behind it. She aint fast, but she'll pull.
