Water soluble metal etch???
I had an email from a por15 employee and he said use a water soluble metal etch to clean the metal...Where can i find such an item???
Since i cant get the por 15 stuff over the counter, there must be something to use more readily
Personally, I feel safer using a product like their Metal Ready or something since I can see the difference before painting over the bad areas. We've been using OSPHO, which I've found at Home Depot in the paint department. It's only about $12-$14 a gallon at Home Depot as opposed to close to the same price for a quart at an auto paint store, and way cheaper than Metal Ready. I've been very pleased with the results of both products. Thing is, you have to leave the OSPHO on longer (24 hrs) whereas the Metal Ready gets washed off with water after 20 mins. For the real heavy rusted spots you should (don't have to) leave either of them on for a good 24 hrs, sand the heavy spots again, then treat again.
Also, if you're looking to paint the POR15 on a visable part, such as the frame, and want a fairly smooth looking finish, you'll need to sand off the places where the OSPHO really bubbled up after it cured(you'll see what I mean if you use it, turns black and is raised).
Good luck with you project and let us know how it turns out.
