I have a high pitched whine that is proportional to truck speed. This is a 2003 350 PSD. I've just replaced the entire front axle so it's not from the front. I noticed that there is a center support bearing. I'm new to this truck and need to know if these give problems.
Hard to determine the problem if you are not sure of exactly where it is coming from. If it sounds like it is in the front of the truck are you sure it is not the turbo? I have also noticed that the brakes will whine when wet, but other than that hard to say. Any more information you can give will help others to give you a more precise area to explore. Keep us posted.
It's definitely not from the front. It started about three weeks ago when I went over a speed bump with some speed. It is related to truck speed and not engine speed so that eliminates the turbo. I replaced the entire front axle three days ago so it is not the front axle. That leaves the back axle or the center support bearing. The bearing looks easy and cheap. The axle looks hard and expensive. I heard of a guy who, while trying to locate the source of a noise in his car, tied himself to the bottom of his car on his creper. His friend drove the car. Unfortunately he died while doing this but he did make the Darwin list.
my dads 08 dually had a whining problem that got louder as the speed increased. Finally sumthing in the rear axle gave out. I dont remember exactly what it was, but i believe it was something manufactured to break before something really big broke, like a fail-safe. the truck wouldnt go above 10mph after it broke. you might wanna check and see if the rear axle is making the noise
Jack the rear of the truck off the ground and put it on good jack stands, then put it in gear to see if you can figure out where the noise is coming from.
