Transmission swap.
I walked a mile or so to a gas station and picked up 6 litres of tranny fluid and started filling it back up hoping for the best. It took 5 litres till it was full and by now the manifolds had returned to their normal colour so I fired it up, put it in 3rd and off I went. So far all is well, no leaks, and it shifts and drives well. I have even pulled the same trailer and sleds over 500 kms since then!
In the summer I plan to pull my boat around and I dont want to trust the once overheated tranny so I plan to replace it to be safe. This brings me to my question... I found a 1995 Aerostar with a freshly rebuilt tranny and a bad motor, price is right, just need to know if a 1995 tranny is the same as a 1992 or if they are interchangable?
do a complete 11 qt gentle flush now, maybe a couple of them spaced 100 miles apart. what's in there now is real tranny killer poison acid.
start with 11 qts of the cheapest Mercon rated you can find and then use 11 qts of Valvoline Maxlife ATF, Castrol Import Veh. multi use ATF(not the US car rated stuff) or Mobil 1 ATF
put on the largest plate fin ATF cooler you can fit in front of the radiator.
you may save the tranny you have.
what causes the exh. manifolds to overheat, just the tow?
i used to pull 4k lb travel trailer with 50 sq ft of frontal wind surface with my 4L in 4th OD on the flats and no head wind all the time, no problemo
look for an engine, throttle body, MAF injector problem. sounds like it's running too rich at warm cruise
I will definitely be getting a large tranny cooler. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com

>Will the A4LD from a 4L Aero or Explorer/Ranger later than 92 bolt in without any modifications?
Im going to start a new thread for the overheated manifold issue but heres what I can tell you for now... Engine runs well, smooth quiet and has good power. The motor is a new Ford crate motor 30,000 miles on it now. Ignition timing was bang on list time I checked.
I agree with your assesment about running too rich but the vehicle recently passed a government emissions test with flying colours and there are no mil lights on.
Other possible cause could be clogged cat but typically that would noticably reduce performance.
Anyhow, I have some exhaust work to do on it soon so I will take the cat off and have a look at it.
just put your 3L bell housing on the 4L A4LD tranny
see this herky beast
A4LD Performance Transmission and Parts from PATC, A4LD
Performance A4LD, using a 4 liter transmission with a 2.3, 2.8, 2.9 or 3 liter bell housing. This transmission comes with everything in the A4 Wake Up Kit plus a double clutch 4 liter torque converter and 2 Red Eagle or Black bands. The 4 liter transmissions came from the factory with stronger planet gears and more clutches.
engine should not run that hot in N Ontario winter night. something is not right.
get lots of heat in thru floor boards on mine while heavy towing over 75d F outside but engine/tranny never overheats. feet just get roasted

until i added more foam mylar floor insulation 3/4".
