Hey y'all. what ya think about my latest idea for a project..... Rat rod mudder. F250 frame carbed 300 I6 engine, ZF5 trans no front fenders and hood, flat bed rear. and D60 axle upfront and ford 10.25 rear.
sounds fun and wild but doesnt sound like a "rat rod"
im sorry but IMHO just cause its made of parts and flat black doesnt make it a "rat rod"

when i think of a rat rod i think of a vehicle with an exposed engine, minimal sheetmetal, and a roofless cab. I called it a rat rod because i came up blank for a better term and in my mind thats the closest thing it could be asociated with
I always thought the "Rat" referred to a big block chevy. So I was real confused..
The term "rat rod" came well before there was ever a big block chev. When the only big block was a mopar
A rat rod is a style of hot rod or custom car that, in most cases, imitates (or exaggerates) the early hot rods of the 40s, 50s, and 60s. It is not to be confused with the somewhat closely related "traditional" hot rod, which is an accurate re-creation or period-correct restoration of a hot rod from the same era.
Most rat rods appear "unfinished" (whether they actually are or are not), with just the bare essentials to be driven.
The rat rod is the visualization of the idea of function over form. Rat rods are meant to be driven, not shown off. Sometimes the customization will include using spare parts, or parts from another car altogether.
this is why i refer to my truck as the my 49 not my rat rod i find the term very over used
although it would in most opinions fall into the category of rat rod
