Dual wheel conversion...
I have never posted here before. I hang out mostly over on the '48 to '50 forum. I have a question or questions as the case may be regarding a dual wheel conversion. My son has an '86 F-250 with the 6.9 diesel and 4WD. He is wanting to use the rolling chassis under his '53 F-100 body. He would also like to have dual rear wheels. What I am asking here is if anybody has converted one of these rear ends to dual wheels and if so what was needed to do the job?
Being as this is part of a rolling 4WD chassis he wants to use we need to keep the same rear end ratio so just running out and finding a dual wheel rear axel is not an option unles we can find one that we can swap the gears into.
We would prefer being able to swap whatever parts are needed to this rear end. What would really be nice is to be able to swap over a disc brake set up for the duals as with the later model Super Duty trucks but that is probably just too much to ask for.
Later Folks...
As for the DRW conversion, I'm not really sure. The wheels will obviously bolt to your axle, but I recall someone saying the spring perch widths were different between SRW and DRW axles and the inner wheel would contact the spring on a SRW axle. Would you be converting the front wheels as well. I know at least with a 2wd the front hubs swap between styles, I wouldn't be surprised to find the 4wd front hubs are just as easy a swap.
Dont take my word as gospel though, I have yet to hear anyone say it can't be done.
