Went to buy the car today. Guy asked me what I was going to do with it. I told him he got mad and would not sell me the car!!! I am going to have to have one of my buddies go and buy it for me.

Dave your answer should have probably been "I think it will make a good hauler". Then later after you had your truck setup you could have finished the answer with a "I think it will make a good hauler in pieces in my F100"

Simple rule of thumb: easier to use a 9" for 5x5.5" lug pattern, and 8.8 for 5x4.5" lug pattern. Depending on what front you use.

The 8.8 can be just as strong as a 9"....especially the Explorer 8.8.

Bummer the guy wouldn't sell. I usually just use the moniker, " I like these type of cars, and plan on driving another"

Even if you do not get that car there should be plenty of those cars in upstate new york and eastern pa, I would think. We have crap loads down here. Around here see there are tractor auctions locally like every other week and usually classic, used vehicles are consigned with the farm equipment. One thing you can count on is that there will be multiple crown vics with the police setup for sale. Just a thought on another outlet.

Hi Dave,
Been there, done that... Simple rule of thumb,,, never say anything about why you want a vehicle or what your intentions are. If they ask you can simply say you are going to drive it. You will be telling the truth. How else are you going to get it home. It also eliminates the need to spend a lot of time explaining something to someone who doesn't, won't or can't understand. People are goofy about this kind of stuff. It's like they want control or visiting rights. Of course a lot of the stuff I buy is beyond the driving stage so there is no problem. Good move on getting someone else to buy it. That way you can call the guy up later and ask him if the money you found in the car when you were taking it apart was his.

Don't feel bad, I deal wth that all the time. I call it planning evolution. Look at it this way, you are improving your design with out have to undo anything. Nothing I build ever ends up as originally planned. I'm dealing with that righht now on three different projects.

You're talking about less that 1/4" in gear diameter. That is hardly enough to make any decernable difference. Are you really planning on driving it so hard that you think it will matter?

Well I was just wondering, with the 9" having 3 pinion bearings and is a strong rear with lots of upgrade parts avail. It is also made with both bolt patterns and larger axle's bigger bearings, different widths and different cases. I guess if your just useing a 8.8 for a replacement axel thats fine. I was just wondering why people were useing the 8.8 and as has been stated they are getting hard to find in places. As for me driving so hard it will matter, its a real possibility
on and by the way here is another one of my cars with a 9" in it

also the reason for my user name A4T1RAT

There seems to be plenty of them laying arond my neck od the woods. I looked at a bunch of Pull-A-Part yard's online inventories and there seems to be plenty of Explorers listed.

I doubt very many guys have a monster mill like you do with a blower on it in their old Effies. Probably less than one percent. With a mill like that I wouldn't even trust a 9" that was not seriously beefed up. I'd be tempted to move on to a Beefed up Dana 60 which is what I would do if I was building an Effie with that kind of seroius HP.

BTW, your yellow road rocket is way cool and I don't even like yellow. I think you ought to paint it up with graphics like an old NYC Yellow Cab complete with the litte light up on duty sign on top.

Explorer 8.8's are better built than mustang/ranger 8.8's. they're 31 spline (better than car and early truck 9" 28 splines) have disc brakes (cost of discs on a 9" go up), and have plenty of gear ratios as well. An argument can be said that the 8.8 is weaker due to the C clip design, but they make C clip eliminators as well. The Explorer housing is 3.25" OD, 1/4" thick....just like the better 9" rears. So each can hold up well. That said, I still prefer the 9"

This is too good to be true, but it is. My buddy calls this guy up tells him he wants to fix the car up and give it to his dad as a retirement gift. This boob ends up selling the car to him for $100 less than I was going to give him!!!!
