problem w/brake light switch

yesterday the brake lights on my 2002 Ford Explorer would not turn off, even when the truck was turned off w/the keys out of the ignition. after a little research I found that the problem was the brake light switch. i removed the switch and opened it up to find what i expected, the contacts touching each other. i bent the contacts slightly so they were no longer touching and put the switch back on. after i did this the brake lights wouldn't come on at all and i couldn't move the transmission from the park position. i removed the switch again to find that the contacts where it connected weren't alligned properly. I fixed this and put it back on again, however i left off the plastic bushing that fits between the switch and the brake pedal rod. after i did this the brake lights worked and i could put the vehicle in drive. however the brake icon on the dash doesn't come on when i push the brake anymore. i tried putting the bushing back on both ways that it could go and the lights didnt work and i couldnt get the vehicle out of park. does anyone know why it might not be working when the plastic bushing is on and why the brake icon doesnt come on the dash when the brakes are pressed. any help would be greatly aprreciated. thanks!
