The eye doctor told me the same thimg once, then asked if welding bothered my eyes, asked how I could be a weldewd if it bothered my eyes. It doesent bother my eyes for some reson.
it depends on the type of welding im doing if it bothers me... but most time i have the shade turned up to 13 so it dims it out quite a bit.. but the majority of the time it doesnt.. its darker in those hoods than most people think... specially if your looking down and the base of your hoods against your jacket.. it can make it pretty dark in there... when i was going to school for it i use to walk back to the car with the hood down till i got in it.. made a nice pair of sunglasses lol.. if i could still wear contacts i probably would get a pair of blast furnase glasses like i use for oxyacetylene welding and wear them to drive... ones i have are darker than sunglasses but i can still see well enough to drive with.. (actually did do that once...) when i stopped at my brothers i switched to my normal glasses with the sunclip felt like i wasnt wearing sunglasses at all then

I normally keep the tint about 10 or so. Never really had a problem with it. I have been konw to cut useing a oxyacetylene torch whereing sunglasses, but that could have something to do with my eyes seem to get worse everytime i go tohe the eye doctor.
Seems we have alot of welders here, I've always used the darkest shade I could. I'v moderated a little but been welding for around 30 yrs. I do 99% TIG on Alum. and SS, I have a mig and stick welder at home.

ive actually seen some sunglasses get as dark as welding shades... and i know quite a few people that do it the same way... oxyacetylene doesnt have the same issue as the others do.. they release the rays similar to the sun which can hurt the eyes.. thats why the hood shields are made different to block them..
I know i should be whereing at least shade 5's, but for the small amout of cutting I do, and it takes longer to get out the shade 5's then cut, and thats why I do what I do.

im trying to get into the field but lack of real world experience is whats hurting me.. i have the equivalent to 1 yrs worth exp from schools training.. and can weld pretty D* good too.. i even get compliments from guys that been doing it for 20 yrs say i weld better they do (to me thats both surprising and sad) but still cant seem to get a job around here doing it.. i can do oxyacetylene, stick, mig, tig... doesnt matter to me... but my favs are mig tig and top fave oxyacetylene ( i like to go old school gas welding like that)
but here at the house i have 220 ac/dc Lincoln stick welder a smaller 70 amp stick welder (which sucks a lil to use.. its a bear to get that one started) and dads got a gasless wire feed (not fluxcore).. i dont like the quality of welds that comes off that but has saved my butt a few times before i got that lincoln.. and we also got a small oxyacetylene set up but its pretty much useless.. after 5 mins the bottles run out... theres also a propagne torch out there too...

I dont have any welders at home. I have 440V miller XMT welder at work. It will Mig, tig and stick. I havent really had a need to tig any thing in a while, just might need to find an excuse. I would love to learn how to weld with oxyacetylene weld one of these days.
