It doesn't have one. It uses the phasers for EGR function.

Thanks, I REALLY apperciate the answer. I wonder what the parts guy at the local Dealer Ship was going to sell me for $132.00.

Bought a 04 FX4 5.4 with 110000mi. 200mi. after paying for it SES light came on with a PO171. Idles a little rough, but runs fine otherwise. Had it run on computer at two different Dealerships. Both say I need +- $2000 worth of phasers and parts to fix engine. Don't hear much ticking from engine. Been chasing other causes. One TECH. said it was caused from sludge( truck has been on a regular maintance program, oil changed every 3000mi. or so) other TECH. thought chain had skipped a tooth. Rough idle only happens after engine warms up. I guess I'll just keep looking. THANKS, Billy J.

Thats what I'm here for. A p0171 is lean on bank 1 don't know why they said you needed phasers. You could have a failing injector or a vacuum leak somewhere. Is that the only code you have?

Thats the only code. First Tech said the cam was stuck at 5/7 at idle, whatever that means. Said it was caused by sludge. Oil has been changed regularly. Took the cam adjusting solenoid out. Looked clean as well as what I could see in the hole. Replaced anyway. No change. Fuel filter has also been changed. Replaced upper o2 sensor on passenger side, no change. Haven't changed MAF but have cleaned it with MAF cleaner.
Second Tech said he thought chain had slipped one tooth. I listened to both sides of engine at front bottom of valve cover, with a stick (old timers way of isolating engine noise) and both sound same, like what I think is normal.
Only misses at idle after warm. Sounds like a little pop from right pipe. If you hold your hand or a piece of paper against pipe, it feels like its sucking back a very little.
ANY SUGGESTION IS APPRECIATED
Thanks, Billy J

I was getting a PO171 & PO174, (lean both banks) with erratic idle once it warmed up. Turned out to be vacuum leak in hose to fuel rail..

Could be a number of things. I doubt the chain jumped a tooth, they just dont do that. Its not the MAF, that would affect both banks. You could have a intake gasket leaking on the right side. I have seen a few valve springs break and cause a skip at idle. Or you could have a weak coil or bad plug.

I've replaced the upstream O2 sensor on passenger side, no change. If the down stream sensor was bad would it cause a lean bank run code or does it just report the lean condition?

The downstream o2 monitors the cat to make sure it is working. It cant cause a lean code. You could try spraying the intake gasket area with brake or carb cleaner while its running rough to see if the gaskets are leaking. If the engine smooths out then they are. Or you can power brake the engine to see if you can make it skip worse, that will lead to a bad coil or plug or possibly injector.

I'll try those things next. What are the things on each side of the Throttle Body, and can they be cleaned? I've already cleaned the Throttle Body. BJ

One is the TP sensor and the other is the motor that opens and closes the throttle plate. Neither require any cleaning.
