Welcome to FTE.

Maybe suspect the IAC.

Look in the "Tech Info" thread atop this forums thread listing page, for IAC info on where to locate it & how to test it.

Cleaning it dosn't often do much good for any length of time, so Ford recommends replacement if it's found to be acting up.

I just replaced my 99 4.0L's IAC, after cleaning didn't do much.

Let us know how it goes.

OK, good find fix & feedback & to hear it was such a simple & low cost fix.

The IAC couldn't comensate for THAT much of a vacuum leak.

Be sure to disconnect the battery B- cable for 20 min, or so, to wipe the computers memory, to allow it to begin to learn it's new idle strategy & rebuild the fuel trim tables, now that you've fixed the vacuum leak.

This should avoid idle & driveability problems.

After disconnecting the battry, I turn off all electrical loads, start the engine, let it idle down some, then slowly shift into each gear including "R", pausing long enough to feel each one engage, ending in "P" or "N".

Then let it fully warm up without touching or turning on anything on, then shift into ALL the gears again. This will let the computer quickly relearn it's idle strategy.

The remainder of what it needs to relearn can usually be done while driving some city & highway routines.

Paw, you can speed up the 'de-learn' by disconnecting the battery, and then using something to drain the ECM memory, shorting the Negative cable to the Positive cable, then stepping on the brakes, or turning on the headlights. Connecting + & - completes the circuit, as if the battery were there, and the load will, in theory, be powered (ha) from the ECM memory capacitor - for a fraction of a second.
If this is wrong, someone will for sure correct me.

Yup all those will do it, but I really don't like shorting the battery cables to drain the KAM memory, as it presents a spike type discharge & solid state things aren't very tolerant of circuit spikes, although thats a fast way, it may not be good practice imo.

Now the resistive type discharges you've outlined are likely safer, as they more slowly do the discharge deed & are less likely to cause mischief, while speeding up the discharge/memory wipe process.

I usually just leave a door ajar & let the dome lamp do the discharge wipe, if I'm in a hurry!!!!

More thoughts for pondering.
