Different stories about this. I'd like to get some clarity on the issue, since I'm thinking about having it done.
I have heard that:
= some treatments actually bind to the oxidation and produce a new substance, thus stopping the process.
= undercoating AFTER rust has appeared can acually accelerate the oxidation. I am guessing that this may be the case if water (and air) finds its way underneath the coating to an area where it evaporates slowly, and continues (unseen) until it's too late.
My '95 F150 shows some minor frame rust. The worst of it is at the rear in the area of the spare tire. I'd like to get the truck undercoated for rust protection and sound-dampening. But I'd really like to get a better picture of what's available and what works best for my situation.
I've never been a big fan of undercoating, unless it was put on the vehicle while it was brand new, sitting on a car lot. Last year i removed my box and undercoated it. I hit the entire underside of the box with a wire wheel on a 7" angle grinder and gave it hell. And along all the edges i sand blasted. While it wasnt all down to bare metal i figured it was good enough. I first sprayed the entire underside of the box with PPG epoxy primer and then sprayed the undercoating on while the primer was tacky. Now a year later my box is rusting even worse now. Mind you my box isnt a light box, its a Rebco truck box, made from 1/4" plate and 12 guage, so it can take a bit of rust. I would use Fluid Film, LPS, oil or POR 15 before i ever use undercoating again. Thats just my opinion.
i've used used motor oil, and foundation coating mixed and sprayed for years, and that's all that's kept out 77 f-100 company truck as good as it is (orignal paint) and up here in nova scotia, it's salt on the roads, and salt in the air from the ocean.... my 89 ranger is in worse shape then the 77 f-100.... i'm a firm beliver in it.
i've reciently switched to an undrecoating formula from Bowe's, it's about $70 cad for 5 gallons of it. works great, creeps well, and soaks in like oil.
personally i'd say painting over any rust is a no no.. put good oily undercoating on it..
