I have a 92 5.8 4x4 and my cat converter is leaking. Can i remove and install straight pipe. Will it help mileage and hp or hurt it. truck has 130000 miles
Form a legal standpoint, no you can't. Replacing it with another cat is your best bet for the best performance and economy. If you are in a non-smog area you can probably do it, but it would hurt the resale value if you ever wanted to trade the truck in or otherwise sell it.
I don't think it will pass any state inspection, smog or not. No muffler shop will remove one. Some converters are bringing good money as scrap. Might offset replacement cost a little.
If your state doesn't require a vehicle inspection.... such as Florida... do whatever you want. Just keep in mind it is a federal law.
I personal removed my cat when I went with dual exhaust. But if the issue ever came up... I may place two cats on it... but after years of not having a cat... I'm not too worry about it. But it's Florida.
My 85 Toyota pickup’s cat started plugging up so I unbolted it and knocked all of the insides out and put it back on. I drove that truck for 15 years and went through 7 smog checks with it over that time. It always passed the emissions with no problem. I had a friend with the identical pickup and he came to me one time and wanted to borrow the cat off of mine so he could get his smog check. I told him mine was hollow and so he went ahead and went through the smog check and his passed as well. I understand that the smog stations use a laser thermometer now to check and make sure the temperature is up on the cat to assure them that it is working.
It could be removed, but remember that the computer is looking for that cat so it will probably degrade your performance a little. It would be better to have it replaced if it is getting bad. Otherwise leave it alone. It is legal and easier that way.
