1995 3.0 The minivan has cut off 2 times in the last couple of days while my wife was driving it.Today at a yield sign it died, she was able to get it cranked 3 different times before it would finally run.She had to hold the gas pedal to the floor each time to crank it up.Any ideas why it is cutting off?
Any CEL (check engine light) coming on when this happens? Can you pull codes? There is a sticky at the forum top on how to do this.
Any maintenance/repair work performed lately?
Sounds initially like something simple- vacuum line broken/unplugged or a dirty MAF (mass air flow sensor) are the two most common stalling problems. From there, it could be fuel delivery issues (fuel pressure regulator or fuel pump). Further along in the diagnosis: The 3.0 engine with advanced age can have distributor issues but the fact that it restarts is a good sign.
Open the 'dog house door' inside the cab for a view of the rear of the engine. A top the rearward side of the engine is vacuum 'tree' with several vacuum lines and perhaps one or two vacant ports with no hoses but should have covers(plugs). If all tree ports have covers and lines attached, follow as best you can to see if the corresponding ends are all attached and there are no loose ends or broken lines. Be very careful with the small, white/cream color vacuum lines going to and from the vacuum reservoir in the engine compartment. These are very brittle from age/heat and will easily break.
You can do a search on this forum for more info on cleaning the MAF sensor.
Just fixed what sounds like a similar issue with out 94 3.0 Ours would stall on idle, and would be difficult to restart (flooring the gas to get it to restart) until it reached operating temp then it ran fine. I replaced a cracked vacuum hose on the PCV valve and cleaned the IAC with electrical parts cleaner and it runs like a champ now!
