Don't know all the gotchas, but in general it will stop lazy inexperienced thieves. A pro will know how to get around it either by messing with the wiring, of just haul it away. The old PATS used resitive chips in the key and an experienced thief could jumper things to make it work. The newer systems work in different ways and I don't think they are still called PATS.
One drawback is that sometimes the key or contacts get dirty and then it doesn't work right. So you need to keep things clean.
Just a little foggy memory on PATS so hope someone who is up to date on things chimes in.
