Hello guys first post here. I was riding down the road yesterday and my truck cut off. I turn the ignition and have no power there or at the windshield wipers. I do have parking and tail lights. even an interior light but no power at the switch. Anyone have any ideas of what to do. Someone told me to check the fuse links but i am not exactly sure how to. I do have a volt meter and a test light if it helps Thanks for replys. By the way its a 1990 F-350 7.3 liter
Thanks for your help i found a burnt wire. i did a test and connected a wire to the to burnt ends and everything worked. i am going to do a better fix tomorrow
You need to check and see if your burn't wire is a fusible link if it is replace it with a fusible link (available at parts stores) or install an inline fuse there.
well i put the fuse holder in and everything worked. i went down the road again and out the fuse went again. so defiantly something shorting it out. any ideas on how to trace my problem?
Ok has there been any work done lately that could have pinched or relocated any wires where they possibly groud out .
another thing I have run into several times is problems with some of the wild stereos that are installed nowadays.
Have you added any aftermarket anything requiring electricity.
Have you had to change any fuses before on any of your components.
How does your wiring look in general have you noticed any altered places.
I have had someone do some work recently. When i took the truck to him it was straight wired so the fuel would come on. The only way you could cut it off was to undo the wire. well he put a new glow plug timer on and also replaced some wires. He kept pushing it out of his garage like he did not want to work on it. I went up there and he told me when he turned the ignition on it smoked in several places he fixed and was scared he was going to burn it up. So i towed it back to my house and turned the ignition switch and nothing was smoking like he said. It cranked right up rode for about 10 mins and burnt that wire into in the picture above. I instaled a fuse holder there as a temporary fix to see if the truck would work. it did so i drove it today and it blew the fuse after about 10 mins of driving. then i said no problem changed fuse and it blew it out a min later. then it blew it every 30 seconds
We need a little more history here.
When did it mess up causing you to hot wire the fuel it only takes one wire to make these motors run.
when you had it hot wired was everything else working glowplugs winshield wipers etc.
When you installed your fuse and turned the key on was your wait to start light coming on for a few seconds like it should.
with what youve said so far I'm leaning toward a wiring problem between your alt gp relay starter relay that genaral area how does your wires look going to the altenator.
There is a gray connector on the passenger fender well that is famous for causing your initial problem most have been bypassed but it sounds like maybe you have a human induced problem now. Some of the guys have pictures of the wiring in these areas they will chime in need to make sure the wires are in their original places.
What do you mean hard wired so the fuel would come on do you have an electric pump.
. My uncle gave me the truck about 2 months ago. Before that it set up for 2 years. I am not sure how he had it wired to be honest. When he gave it to me we took it directly to a diesel man. I do remember that the glow plugs were not coming on when you turn the switch. but the motor would turn over at the key. The guy who worked on it put a new glow plug timer on it. And from what i can see spliced a few wires together here and there. When i turn the key now wait to start light comes on. its is when I leave the truck running for 10 or so mins that the fuse will blow and its like you turn off the power at the ignition but the key is still in the on position just no power there until i put a fuse again
