Changing float in rear tank.

On my F250 SC, the PO removed the spare tire and welded the tow hitch to the frame. It has a center square tube that runs front to back down the middle of the tank 4 or 5 inches under the tank and out the back. The question is can I lower the tank enough with only 4 or 5 inches to get the sending unit out and change the float? It's been acting up lately, and wiring, guage and grounds are all good. I hate incorrect readings on guages and especially the gas guage. I've done the midship tank already but that was easily accesible.

The following parts are still availabe from Ford.

COAZ9202B .. Float / Fits: cars/trucks 1957/79.

MSRP: $7.41 // FTEpartsguy.com price: $5.34.

COAF9276A .. Sending Unit Gasket

MSRP: $0.77 // FTEpartsguy.com price: $0.60

D1AZ9A011A .. Plastic Meshed Filter Screen, slides onto the pickup tube.

MSRP: $21.73 // FTEpartsguy.com price: $15.65.

The float is made from two pieces of copper soldered together.

The solder breaks down, gas seeps in, float slowly settles to the bottom of the tank.

The plastic meshed filter screen gets clogged up over time by rust, scale and etc.

Most ppl have no idea it's there, so it rarely gets changed.

I just had mine out to change the pick up screen 4" or 5" might be enough to clear its close enough to try but when you pull it out and it gets to the float you have to turn it 90 degrees paralell with the front of the tank to get the float out it has to come torward the driver side. so make sure you have 10-12" of space to swing around against the tank.

I do not believe that you will have enough room to manage that entire unit out with the limited space provided. The welded in reciever can be troublesome, and many in this situation have had to remove the bed bolts and lift the bed for additional clearance. This might be a better solution than having to cut the reciever and repair it after. Never quite the same after that.
Should you choose to keep your reciever, then you can try lifting the bed.

The local Ford dealer used to keep the floats under the counter, we sold THAT many! Must be the reason why they don't need the bailout.
