More tuner questions
Have an 08 F250 FX4 Crew 4X4 with 5.4 and 4.10. Used to tow a travel trailer 2 -3 times per year and daily driver the rest of the year.
Been looking for a tuner but can't decide which one. Everybody says theirs is the best. Bully Dog, Hypertech, Edge, SCT, Gryphon.
Where could I find a comparison?
Are canned tunes, pretty much the same in all of them?
Do I really need any custom tunes?
Have seen some used units on eBay. Most specify the unit is unlocked. Is there a limit on how many times a unit can be unlocked?
(On another Ford forum, someone mentioned an X3 they had for sale, still had 4 unlocks left)
If a used unit is VIN locked, what does it cost to unlock?

I've heard in the past with the SCT Xcal it can only be used on so many different vehicles and then it gets locked to the last vehicle it was used on. If it is locked and you need to use it on another vehicle you have to send it back to SCT to have it unlocked and they send it back to you. I don't remember how much they charged but I know it wasn't cheap, but it was less than buying a new unit.

You can clear it with the old software that used to come with the units, but not with the newer software. They caught onto that little perk.

Lots of options out there for tuners, Get custom tunes written for your truck. Your truck having drive by wire a lot of the canned tunes do not address this system completely. A new SCT X3 unit can be switch between vehicles a max of 5 times. If you find a used unit X2/X3/LW and it is locked SCT charges 150 bones to unlock it.
