I'm going to do house remodeling for the next year or more... I am assuming that a simple F-150 XL V6 is all I need as I won't be doing any towing and only hauling construction debris, lumber, major appliances, etc. What do you think? There is a V8 I can get for not too much more but I'd have to go a bit of a distance. Nice thing is the rebate is $1000 more for V8 so I could if necessary... but what do the V6 crew say?
The V6 is a good rengine, but I wish I had gotten the V8. I dont get any better mileage in town, and could have used a little more grunt myself. If I could get a V8 at the V6 price, I would jump on it. Thats just my opinion.
Thanks Blackout... I guess the side question is how much extra $$ is the V8 worth... its pretty hard to find a base truck with the V8 around here. I have a lead on one and there is $1000 extra rebate so it could work out... but generally the V8 trucks have bundled options that bring the price up around $2-3k extra.
honestly, drive a 4.2 and 4.6 truck back to back, they feel about the same power wise, but the pushrod 4.2 feels alot better on the low end then a modular v8, which of course the less you have to wind it up the less wear and less fuel you use. if you need the extra power id look for a 5.4. my work has 2 E150s one has a 4.2 and one has a 4.6, the 4.2 has had far less problems (and hasnt even been serviced in over 30,000 miles!) and pulls just as hard as the v8 does.
I will agree that the 4.2 has good low end, if it is geared right. My 5 sp has a 3.55 axle and I hear a lot of automatic guys complain about the low end. It all has to do with gearing.
well I had the 4.2 in my f-150 and well it was okay but very blah. put some miles on one and the damn thing wont get out of the way. It's a good enough motor for around town I guess. I have the 5.4 in my Expedition and my god. The thing has all the torque in the world and gets the same mileage. I drive work trucks with the 460. even the V-10 and i love getting back in my Expedition at the end of the day. So if your just using it cause you need bed space and take care of it then sure. but the V-8's are worth it to me.
