I've got a 1969 F-100. I'm getting ready to either restore it or sell parts off of it. I was looking under the truck yesterday to look more closely at the frame, and I noticed that underneath the cab there is a "bar" or beam that runs across the frame under the cab. I'm not sure waht this is called, but I think it has something to do with mounting. Anyway...on both sides as it gets close the the edges, it is completely rusted out. It will definately need to be replaced, but I cannot find a replacement for it in any of my catalogs. I fear I will either: A. Have to go to a machine shop and have one built, or B. find one in a junk yard, have them raise the cab and pull it.
Either way I'm looking at big bucks I'm sure. Can anyone tell me what this piece is and what my alternatives are?
Also, as I stated before, I might be selling parts off of the truck. I've heard that the grill from a '69 is considered to be the "Holy Grail" of grills. Mine is in great shape. I was thinking if I sell it I would sand blast it and prime it. Anyone have any idea what one of these grills usually sells for?
You may find more information on the best way to fix or where you can purchase the Cab Support in the forum geared towards the 1969's. The best I could tell you is to buy a steel beam, cut and weld. I don't know what parts are available for that year. I do know we had to recreate our's for our '41.
As for parting out your truck, FTE has a "Classified" section where you may be able to find out what these things are going for and you can place your own "for sale" ads there also. Advertising within the forums is against the site guidelines.
On a personal note, I'd restore it. I love those old trucks.
