I have a 94 f250 I need to get the Trans rebuilt. Im reading that it has aluminum parts in it that can be swapped out for steel ones. Are there any other mods to make this more of a bullet proof tranny? It is behind a 7.3L turbo. A very reputable shop quoted me about $1600, depending on what all I want done.
Pre 95 E4ODs had some areas of weakness, especially behind a Diesel. So the shop told me. The torque converter appeared to be one of the main causes of failure.
My gas 460 E4OD failed due to my stupidity of not checking fluid level while towing. So I overheated the seals and then the Converter started to shudder etc.
Cost me about $2,500 back around 97. So assuming the shop is using the newer uprated components, $1600 is pretty cheap for a full rebuild. Mine needed a new Sun shell and other hard parts plus I wanted it "bullet proof" so it cost more than normal for that time frame.

Anyone else have one rebuilt? All info would greatly help here!
Yours may all ready have this, "Center Support Bearing Upgrade" 90-94 were weak even for gassers. I'm not sure but Ford may have a TSB on this. Do upgrade to steel planetary gear sets, especialy in the OD section.
I obtained all the parts I needed from RacerX (Bill). He sugested the needed parts once I told him the intended use for the vehicle. Once we got our parts he was invaluable in terms of answering questions that arise from time to time. If you tackle this project you will have questions trust me...... rc
