White smoke does mean coolent is burning. but the fact that it goes away is a tricky one... id say it is intermittant EGR Cooler blown, or headgaskets. hard to tell. im leaning twoards a small blow in the headgaskets cause when an engine warms up from being cold the metal changes shape just slightly. maybe this slight change seals the headgasket from its blown state for a little while. got any more info? does it do it on the highway? hows your coolent look? low? high? crap all over the degas bottle? any modifications? problems before this? a little bit more can go a long way on this site.

white smoke on a cold start could also be un-burnt fuel. This could mean a Glow plug system issue. Just throwing things out to think about and look into. Good luck.

Smell the smoke, if it smells like diesel fuel you might have a few glow plugs not working.

White smoke that smells like unburned diesel fuel could also be leaking injectors.

You might check to see if you have the inductive flash. If it is stiction or a lazy injector this flash may help.

The fact that it goes away fairly quick, I'd tend to agree with tex., a leaky injector, witch could be caused by stiction like 69cj said. make sure you have the latest flash and try some hot shots secret, I've seen it work wonders in cases like this.

I had the a similar problem with my new/used 06 psd. Would run rough on start up for 2 to 3 minutes. Had to bring back to dealer to have rear window fixed while there he said they would flash the computer and now it starts up fine only a couple of seconds of rough but smooths out quickly.

Try Hot Shot's Secret

Hey all,

If stiction is suspected or if a failing injector is diagnosed, we recommend Hot Shot's Secret before replacement.

Hot Shot's Secret was developed independently but tested extensively by International and found to correct the problem an amazing 86% of the time. It improved the performance of the engine for the remaining 14%.

Our customers routinely comment that they have better starting, better performance, no turbo lag etc...after treatment.

If used as a preventative, Hot Shot's Secret will help your truck's engine maintain top performance by correcting the issue of stiction by attacking it at the root of the problem.

More info is available on our website at Lubrication Specialties | Diesel Motor Oil | Primrose Engine Oil | Fuel Additives | Oil Additives | Engine Restore|

ALSO we sell a FULL PAO SYNTHETIC diesel oil called Blue Diamond. Used in conjunction with our large bypass filter, this product will maintain oil integrity and also help eliminate the issues with the 6.0 and stiction.

Imagine better performance and not changing oil up to and beyond 50,000 miles!!

Please email or call if you have questions.

Good luck!

Dan
