Valve cover gaskets...

How involved of a job is changing out valve cover gaskets on these engines?

Mine appear to be pissing oil like a drunk irishman and it's running all down the sides of the engine and dripping on the ground.

You may want to check how tight they are before going through the trouble. In my headgasket tear down I found my to be less than hand tight! Mine had been leaking for some time and I wish I had checked long ago, might not have had to buy so much oil.

Definently check them mine were loose and they are again. If u can pull the bolts one by one and put a little locktight on them. I need to do it too its just been to cold.

Not to bad of a job, passenger side takes a bit longer because of the heater box and fuel filter makeing a couple of bolts more fun to remove and replace.

I didn't think loosening bolts was a big problem, I'll definitely have to check that first off.

One bolt under the fuel filter is a pain, two bolts back at the firewall are a pain on the passenger side.

Make sure it's not your turbo oil supply line leaking...just went through this same thing with our turbo '94. Thought valve cover gaskets were leaking (they were a little loose), but they weren't leaking. If it is the turbo oil line, you can't fix it by tightening it-replace the fittings at the ends. Mine was leaking @ the block end-I cut off the little flare on the end of the tube and used a push-in hose fitting instead (like the airlines on a big truck use).

On most engines I have messed with, it's not the bolts coming loose, it's the gasket shrinking making the bolts loose. A older gasket shouldn't do it very much, but a new gasket will need to be re-tightened after a couple of weeks, and then after a few months.

Nah the feed line isn't leaking. I have a -6 AN line on my truck. It looks like it seeps a little at the turbo end but it's not leaking enough for this.

The oil I have is running down from the valve covers, down the sides of the engine and dripping off the pan and such. Every now and then I can smell burned oil through the heater (I assume from it getting on the exhaust manifold when they get hot)
