taking out windows

I'm going to start doing some body work on "The Bitch" (my new name for my 69 F-100). I'm going to take the windows out so I can do it right. My question is this....should I keep ANY of the old rubber around the windows or can I order all new rubber? Some of the catalogs say you have to keep the old sealer...why?

My experence with windows is very very minimal.

But from what i've seen on other cars is the fact that it's a pain to remove the window with the seal intact without breaking the window. Not that it can't be done, just when ever I've personaly tried, i've lost the window.

I'm unsure on something this old... i'm just going by my recent cata log listing for 67-72 window rubber, saying that the front one is about $50. Assuming this figure, given that ruber does indeed age / rot over time, given the cost of a replacement window is likely to be higher, and assuming you have a window already that has no cracks what so ever, it would be wise to accept that a new rubber is $50, and cut the old one away preserving the window.

You should be able to save both. I have taken several windows out of 65-66 cabs in the last several years without breaking any. I even reused one of the window rubbers that was in good condition. The thing to do is be patient and let the black sealer stretch out a little at a time. Remove the top first and then roll the window forward. The window rubbers are cheap at about $30 so having a replacement ready is not a big expense. Also, a warm day helps alot to loosen the sealer.
