Question Trailer hookup

I have an 06 harley davidson f250. The other day i noticed that my running lights were not working. I check the trailer and the truck and it is something on the truck. I have a hook up for a small plug and a big plug on my truck and on both of them i have turn signals, and brake lights but the running lights are not working. Could it be something simple or what should I do about it?

How do you hook up the trailer? 4 pin or 7 pin? If you use the 7 pin and a pigtail I would jiggle the pigtail around where the cable goes into the plug (on both ends). Running lights went out on my dad's trailer last time we camped. Pulled over and, through our brilliant investigative techniques, started moving the cable and the lights flickered. Turns out that the hang of the cable had worn something loose in the pigtail plug to cable connection. The company sent my dad a new one for free.

I would jiggle the cabling, especially around the connections at the plugs and where the cables go into something. At least it's a place to start, and it's free.

It sounds like a fuse somewhere. Get out the book and start looking for the one that controls the running lights.

On an '06, looks like fuse #38 in the passenger compartment fuse block.

Clarification... Are the running lights on the truck not working? Or are just the running lights on the trailer not working.

If the running lights on the truck are not working, they are not going to work on the trailer either, no matter what you do to the trailer wiring circuits. Most likely in this case the fuse is blown for the lights, or the switch is malfunctioning. Or if you have auto-lamps or remote keyless entry, there may be a malfunction in the Vehicle Security Module or the Park Lamp relay.

If it's only the trailer, then your problem is likely the trailer running lamp fuse or relay.

Good. Now you have to figure out why it burned out.

They sometimes just blow. Not as often as people think IMO. But waiting to see if it happens again is good.
