I'm in washington... I'm sure that like many other places in the country, traditional silica can not be done outdoors, and if indoors, a filter system needs to be in place, looks like for good reason. Not doing this full time, I don't wish to invest in a filter system if I can get away with using a diffrent abrassive medium.

In reference to our law on the subject

Paragraph 5 states "(c) Outdoor blasting shall be performed with either steel shot or an abrasive containing less than one percent (by mass) which would pass through a No. 200 sieve"

This leads me to believe I can use tarps, blast without a filter system in place if I use steel shot.

Does anyone else know the legality of this, or know of other forms of media that can be used other then traditional sand that would be complient for outdoor use?

It looks like, according to my state's clean air organization, as long as I plan to do Mobile abrasive blasting, rather then stationary blasting (good gawd this legal stuff is nutty) I don't need to install a BACT, as long as I use material that won't, let me get this right, media containing less than 1% which would pass through a #200 sieve.

What is a #200 sieve? How can one determine the grit qualifies?

 

Hi Again, this from Varginna materail "The size of a particle of blasting grit is the number given to the smallest screen it will pass through. In other words if something passes through a #30 screen but stops at the #25 screen it is known as a #30."
