Looking at buting a '95 f150 with a 300 6 but it has a very eratic idle. It idles fine when firsty cranked but after the idle speed goes down it seems like it is surging to stay running. It idles fine then way low and the motor shakes.....fine then low and the motor shakes.....the whole time it is running. Friend told me to clean the idle air control unit along with the throttle body, change the original plugs and wires(115K), and also the fuel filter.. He said that should fix it. Any experience here? I have always been a chevy man but I really like this little truck! All advise or experience is greatly appreciated!!! Truck is a 1995 f150 300 straight six witha 5 speed 2.73 gears.
Cleaning the valve is fairly easy to do, but like mentioned before, be sure to dry it well. You can check to see if it is really bad before you clean it my unplugging it while at idle. The truck should stall. If so it is good and may just need a cleaning like stated. While at it check the Throttle Body sensor which is connedted to the throttle body, which you may have to remove to get to. It could also be bad. You can check it before removal by back probing the wires with the key "ON" (not running) and check for proper voltage. I can't think of the numbers off the bat, but someone on here should know. I think it is somewhere around .95v -.97v. Better yet check your manual or find a manual. If the range is out, you may be able to adjust it, otherwise replace it. I have a '89 and is isn't adjustable. Nonetheless, both of them were in good shape. I ended up buying an IAC restrictor gasket and it solved my problem. BUT mine was a "hanging" RPM problem.
As stated in all the earlier posts, what was suggested to you should fix the problem. I personally feel it is most likely the IAC, which probably just needs cleaned. Good Luck, let us know how it works out for you.
So I cleaned the throttle-body, the iac valve, changed the plugs which looked horrible by the way, the cap and rotor and she smoothed out! Now the only problem is that while at highway speeds, I feel a miss or jumping in the engine, kind of like I'm running out of gas......so I figure I'll change the wires and fuel filter and shoot in some fuel injector cleaner and hopefully that will fix her!
