a computer question.
if the mileage is burned into the computer, is there any way to read it to see if the speedo head was changed or to tell the actual mileage on the truck/computer??
Whether the PCM retains that info I have not ever heard of that.
You could look at the clock hours on the motor vs the odometer and may be able to kinda get a idea that something doesn't seem right.
that is why i was wondering about the computer.
i remember once a while ago someone saying that the mileage gets burned into the PCM, but i don't completely trust him, cause he is one of those book smart but real life dumb types.
One thing to remember is that, as far as I know, the PCM has two types of memory, memory that has to be "kept alive" with battery power, and memory that has to be flashed, kinda like those flash drives you can get for your computer.
KAM memory is going to be erased whenever you disconnect the batteries, so you can't really store anything you want kept there. Flash memory usually has a "number of flashes" life, although it's a LOT of flashes, do they really want to have to flash the mileage into it and at what interval would they?
Of course, all of that would seem to have to apply to the console as well.
on edit: It seems to me, that if the mileage was available from the PCM, that Ford's diagnostic software would have an option to retrieve it, and that the dealer tech's would know about this. So maybe you can call a dealer service dept and ask.
