my bed was pretty shot, after looking at all the aftermarket ones i decided to build my own! added 3 inch wider fenders from bebops, just have the front to finish up and the tailgate, built a side opening tailgate for easier acess to the fuel filler, will post more pics and specs when i`m done more pics in my gallery! what do you guys think??
A solid, innovative design and excellent welding skills. I like the treatment of post socket to top roll very much. Cool idea on the side-opening gate.
Nice work!
I am sure that there will be a lot of people who will be curious as to the cost, so I will be the first to ask. How much did the steel cost? Was it difficult to weld the roll on the sides without warping?
Excellent work. I checked out your Galleries, you do really nice work. Your helper looks alot like my little girl did, she turned 22 yesterday. Enjoy your time with her now. The next time my daughter is in my truck will be the first time!
thanks guys! i haven`t got a total price for all the steel yet but will post it soon, will also post a list of materials used, basically took my time welding the pipe to the sides, spot welded first, let it cool off for 1/2 hour then did approx 1/4 inch spot welds every inch, let it cool off and keep on doing this until they were fully welded, my daughter is 3 years old and she already wants to take the truck for a spin!! great helper and a real tool hider!!!!
I like what you have done. Out of curiousity, how did you come by 3" wider fenders? Is that something that is available in after market stuff? I don't need any but I didn't realize you could get them. Are you going to put a wood floor in it or use metal?
I am probably going to build a bed for one of my '53s. I'm going for a bit of the heavy duty approach. I will probably use 1/8" tread plat in the floor and maybe even the sides and back so I can toss in machinery or a welding machine and not dent it.
bebops has had them for a while, was going to widen my original fenders but the drivers side had the spare tire indent and the passenger one needed so mutch work that it was not feasable, they were $225.00 each so you can`t go wrong with that!
