i have a 76 f100 and when i mash tha brake petal it will stop tha truck but it sticks and tha petal wont come back up i have to raise it up with my foot. im not loseing any fluid that i can see. would it be tha mc bad or what ? thanks guys
Could be alot of things, does the pedal stick down, and are the brakes actually staying engaged? If its only the pedal, the MC would be my first suspect, sounds funny but before replacing components, check that the pedal isn't binding under the the dash anywhere first. If brakes are also sticking, could be bad shoe hardware, rusted and not returning on the drums, bad sliders if you have disc brakes, bad calipers if the piston isn't returning, contaminated fluid. First check the pedal, then move on to a thorough brake inspection, then if yor satisfied, dump the MC. When you get it off, do a bench test. Also make sure you don't have the emergency brake components in the drums hanging up, even if you don't use them.
Sounds to me like either your MC return spring has broken/deteriorated or the piston is sticking...maybe both.
My MC did the same thing, and when I took it out and tore it down, I found that the return spring had rusted away to virtually nothing...and that the rust particles were causing the piston to jam in the bore.
Of course, I think the last time the fluid in mine was checked/changed was when Carter was still in office.
thanks guys the petal sticks when i mash it down and you can tell that the brakes are working they wont release until i pull the petal back up i will take the wheels off this weekend and check there thanks again
