im trying to research anything about the heat riser located in a 2000 F350, 7.3. after i put stacks on my truck, i noticed an odd sound from my exhaust when it was cold out, and a diesel tech that worked for Ford said it was my heat riser. i was told it could be disconnected simply by unplugging it, unless it had california emissions on it. ive look in several manuals and online and cant find ANYTHING about this "heat riser". can anyone provide any info on where it is and how to identify if my truck is california emissioned? thank you for your time!
The kalifornia emissions should be written on the catalyst engine decal, I expect. I am not very good with diesels, but I thought a heat riser was the tube from the air cleaner to manifolds, so you got hot air into the carb'd motors. Did he say what it did? Maybe he meant something like an EGR valve?
he said it was to help bring up the temp, when its active my exhaust is around 800 deg at 55mph, when it shuts off the temp drops down to about 600 deg where it normally is.
You are talking about the EBPV (exhaust back pressure valve) you can see the arm coming out of the turbo pedestal that activates this valve. What this valve does is closes when the temp is cold in order to help heat the engine quicker. If you live in a cold climate, I would leave it on. Once the temps come up the valve will open and be normal.
ok, thats exactly what i was talking about. i most have remembered only the key words of "heat" and "rise". and i found my truck isnt california emissioned because there was a plug with 2 wires running into the assembly, which wasnt on the cali versions. simply unplug and its good to go. around here it gets just cold enough to turn it on and after about 10 mins on the highway will shut it off, but every time it comes down to an idle, like stop lights, its back on. but i thank you for your knowledge and advice!!
