Growler,
Read Cuda Jim's response to an unrelated issue (Point to ponder) but I think he answers your oil question within.

It's replaceable, but aside from the obvious, broken spring or damaged ball,
only thing I ever heard of to go wrong is getting stuck from dirt. Cleaning it
and the bore usually does the trick. Clean the ball seat too. You can give the
spring a couple tugs to get a tad more pressure on the ball if it feels weak.

The biggest reason for crud getting in there is a IMO flawed design of the oil
system + neglect. The HPOP is fed
UN-FILTERED oil
cold start from the left side valve lifter oil galley through the anti-drain back
check ball valve. Yep, you read that right, un-filtered oil. At the same time
the oil filter is also by-passing oil (un-filtered) back to the oil pan due to oil
pressure that is too high, thick oil when cold. Once the engine starts or
during warm engine starts the check ball closes and the HPOP receives
filtered oil from the HPOP reservoir and the oil filter should
bypassing.
during initial start up or
no longer

[ Gets up on soap box ] This why it's so important to use the correct
weight oil for the air temperature and a high quality filter. I can only imagine
what is happening to the inside of the engine/injectors/HPOP when oil that's
dirty, too thick is being used during cold temperatures (warm too), add a junk
filter that may be bypassing sooner/longer than it should, cough,
cough,
Fram, and you have a rough running engine at best or one that won't
start when cold.... or warm.....or damaged injectors. I hope this give
purpose to the importance of fresh clean oil for proper diagnosis of our
engines. I can't tell you how many PSD's I've fixed by just changing the
oil....and fuel filters too
