I know ford did this in the 60s and early 70s in the Mercury cougars and T-birds and Shelby Mustangs, and i know the early sequential taillights used complicated mechanical setup and then they went to a circuit type, but i was wondering how i would wire sequential taillights? how would i get the lights to light up in sequence? could i use a relay? any tips or ideas would be great, i am also using more than 3 bulbs, possibly LEDs? not sure, and the vehicle i am building these taillights for does not have a kit like the mustangs, and i don't want to buy some kit, they are way to expensive, and i know i can wire this up, but is it more complicated then i think it is? also the wiring in the vechicle is 70s simple so there is no worries of modern elctronic interference, and from what i searched on the internet i can't find any one else doing this? i am looking for radio shack type parts to use, please list the parts i would need, and how to do it, i have basic electronic knowledge, so please make it easy enough for a cave man ok guys? lol lol any help would be great, thanks guys, also pictures on how to do this to 3 bulbs would be great then i can just duplicate it, also i am using the stock taillight wiring socket for power
Thanks GregsSD for the links, and i have Googled it many times, and i see they only have kits, i am thinking i can make this my self, and the kits only goes up to 3 bulbs, i need to do more than 3, more like 27 Leds or bulbs per taillight, i might end up lowering the amount of bulbs, but it will more than likely be more than 3 bulbs, calling all cars calling all cars, i am in need of a electronic guru!!!

If you wanted to build your own, I would try one of these in this link. 555 timer
It already has a relay, so it would handle the light bulb load. What I would do first though, is build it, and then jump the start switch out on the circuit board. Then see how it acts with the start switch jumped on power up. If it goes right into timing, the I would make at least 4 of these, maybe six, one for each bulb in the rear.
Depending on how quickly you wanted the sequence to happen, and how slow your flasher is, you could hook the first bulb up straight to the flasher as original. Then hook the other two bulbs up to the timers. The first bulb would come on when you moved the signal lever, and then the others would come on also, but delayed slightly be the timers. You would only need 2 timers on each side if it would work this way(4 total).
thanks for the info franklin2 you seem to know quite a bit, unlike me this is just a pet project and i would really like to build it, i am looking at this 555 time like a caveman looking at the NASA space ship lol lol lol i get the basic idea of electronics, but i would really have to read that link from front to back a couple times, and where can i get such parts? radio shack? i have never seen printed board before in a store? what kind of store should i look for? and i do realize you live the U.S.A. and have different stores then we have in Canada, but i appreciate your help all the same, i might be able to wrangle up some local techie help, or find someone willing to draw a cave man picture for me! lol lol lol , how would i attach the 555 timer to the bulb? and i could always attach a timer to each level of the light tower? see my links to the 73-79 thread i posted a basic idea in a picture, i can always limit the amount of bulbs, and any more info would help thanks! i am just a cave man when it comes to this stuff, but i am trying and i really want to build this! and i also found a local early 70s cougar with the sequential taillights! so i might rob them out and have a look at how ford did it 30+ years ago, even if the cougar taillights don't work i can always have a basic idea on how it works? and i might be able to steal fords tech and design and mate it to mine? not sure? but thanks for all your help and if you have any more ideas or links to websites i could try please feel free to leave another comment! and thanks again!
