I'm building a 2wd 68 F100. I'm putting a 76 460 in it that I built in 2007. It's in a 4x4 right now with a T18 behind it. I want to be able to pull with it and also have driveability. I hate the ZF. I have had trucks with this trans and it drives me nuts it shifts like a damn semi and thats what I deal with all day being a diesel mechanic. I love the NV4500 but I'm not sure if I want to contaminate my Ford with a Chev or Dodge trans. So ultimately my question is about the T-5 and T-56. Will they handle my power, will they pull, and is it as easy as a crossmember and bellhousing swaps? Also for curiosities sake can I put a bellhousing on an NV4500 that will hook it up with my 460?
For my 460 I looked at the T-56 initially as well. After some talking with a local parts guy about what I expected for my truck, he said it wouldn't be the best choice for a heavier truck. I ended up getting the Tremec TKO-600, 5spd with .64 ratio fifth gear, and capable of 600 ft/lbs.
the NV4500 mates up nicely using a Norvack or Advance Adapters bellhousing kit. We put one in a 79 Bronco, 38"s lockers, 466ci with a 203/205 case and it works beautifully. Keep it sealed up and well lubed your all set.
