88 4x4 help
Hi guys. I have an old 88 light 250 and i was wondering what would have to be done to make it 4x4. It has a coil spring front right now and I was wondering if a coil spring 150 axle setup would bolt in or if the frames are drilled for leaf springs. I know its going to be some work to do but i got the truck for a song and it doesnt have a speck of rust on it, just a lot of little dents and making it 4x4 would be really benificial for me. I was thinking of doing the same thing to my '89 F-150 since it needs a front end again (long story).
Most of the time the answer is go look for a 4x4 and sell it.
My best idea so far is try and find a similar truck thats already a 4x4 and strip what you need off of it. that way you will also have a refernce for anything that you have to cut/chop/fabricate to make the 4x4 front end fit. Reason I say this is there are gonna be lots of little whis-bang gismos that will cost you your left nut if you try and get them from scrapyards.
Your tranny will be different right at the back where the xfer case will mount, driveshafts, tranny cross-member, shifter, stupid little 4x4 dash light...
I think your best bet would be to get a doner vehicle, maybe with a blown engine or something that way you have all the little bits and as a bonus you can sell the leftover peices.
