4WD problems
After replacing the front axle I took it out for a test drive this morning. It was fine in two wheel drive. I tried the 4WD and it seemed to be fine. The problems started when I tried to get out of 4WD. It would not revert to 2WD. It shuddered and the tires would chirp. I was finally able to get out of 4WD by backing up. Any clues as to what is happening? There is fluid and the locking dial is in auto

When you flipped the switch from 4WD to 2WD did the 4x4 indicator light go out right away or only after you backed up?
If there is too much tension on the drive train, the transfer case simply cannot release the gears. This is really a normal symptom of using 4WD on a hard surface and backing up to relieve the tension was the proper thing to do. It has nothing to do with the hubs. The hubs won't try to unlock until the transfer case indicates to the computer that the transfer case has indeed shifted out of 4WD.

The problem is that I have never used a 4WD truck before and have nothing to compare. From your imput and others I have spoken to my 4WD is functioning properly and that's good news.
